not sure where to post this but always tempted to come back to the most efficient forum !

I have a paypal error when i use the paypal option to purchase. it is sent in an email from the "shop" where i should be getting the invoice and it is sent to both customer and shopkeeper:

Error while posting IPN: Unable to find the socket transport "ssl" - did you forget to enable it when you configured PHP?, 388

I have just done a test purchase and i get this every time. The same server supports several shops all running the same system and they work fine. ssl is not enabled for sensitive areas, i have tried googling but cant find the same error anywhere.

what could be causing this error please ?

I have no idea what that is. Did you try to look at forum.virtuemart.net as well?
As you might know, our VM Template has no influence on these kind of sensitive pages (checkout process, invoice generating, or payment&shipping plugins).

Are you using PayPal Payments PRO? or the PayPal Payments Standard?

If it is PRO, then you MUST have SSL certificate. (because the page where people type their credit card info must be encrypted with SSL. Therefore you need to activate the SSL option through VM Configuration and also have a valid SSL license that works okay with your domain.)

SSL is not the case for PayPal Payments Standard though.

thanks anyway for looking, i was fairly sure it wasnt to do with the template but im a bit stuck now. I have asked in the VM forum so fingers crossed someone will recognise the issue.

It is just PayPal standard not pro.

It is payments standard and you don't need SSL in anywhere. SSL is useless with paypal standards.
It might be related to paypal payment plugin settings. Have "SSL Disable" in everywhere in your Virtuemart backend.

Also check your paypal backend and disable this option in your paypal account as well. Because in the paypal account settings, (in settings in www.paypal.com but i don't know where exactly) There is an option something like: "Accept only transaction through SSL, and eliminate others." Maybe this feature is activated in your paypal account.

Thanks again for the extra suggestions. I have found the issue - i uninstalled the Virtuemart aio 18a and the paypal plugin and installed the aio v16, reactivated the plugin and tested and it worked first time !
i wont be updating this one to paypal plugin v18a then !!
