On the product page, there is the color attribute where on user changed the attribute the product images will be updated.

is there any where to update the shopping cart to display the product images base on the attribute selected?

With the current Virtuemart.. No.

You must use "Generic Child Product" custom field for that. Which is a completely different story.

Generic Child Variant works based on select box for product attributes. It does its job but it is a lot time consuming process to setup. Live example: demo.flexiblewebdesign.com/cleanmart/index.php/vm-product-details-page/product-details-default-layout

But we are all hoping to see some improvements on custom fields with Virtuemart3.x (Virtuemart3.x will be released very soon, we all waiting for it)
