You should be aware that, CleanMart is a template. Templates are active only in the front-end. They are absolutely no effect in the backend of Joomla or backend of Virtuemart.
Looks like your problem is related to Virtuemart backend (if i didn't misunderstand you) thus this failure can't be related to our template CleanMart.
But try this;
#1) Add the custom field like normal, don't touch anything, and click "SAVE". Sometimes the custom fields (especially the plugin based ones) starts working normal after the 1st page refresh.
#2) On the page where you are experiencing this problem, open the Browser Console (For Chrome browser, it is here: View >> Developer >> JavaScript Console), and check if there are any red jQuery conflict error messages (TypeError)
