Thanks for the input. Can i see a real world example on your website (a URL) where this rule makes things look better?
I strongly believe this particular CSS rule is necessary for your particular website. Normally nothing should overflow the custom-field's container. I suppose an another CSS rule that comes from your Joomla template limits the custom-field's container to a fixed width; thus the overflow:visible makes the trimmed inner content visible.
