I am trying to set up just the products to show on the "Front page" (listview) of VM2 without categories.
and later a filter in the left column

You would definitely need a module to do that.

Because our Templates are effective in Virtuemart Pages, and to display the products in the Virtuemart pages, you would need to follow some rules. You can't show the uncategorized products in the category page. This doesn't make any sense.

If you don't need categories at all, then i would suggest you to create only one main category, something like "Shop" and put all products into that category, then you can show that "Shop" category with using our Template.

But with modules.. you have more flexibilities.
