You must have done this, regardless of Virtuemart version. It has nothing to do with the VM version.

Our template is using AJAX to load the NEXT and PREV products. Try to disable the AJAX loading and see what will happen with ordinary links.

To disable the AJAX loading on product details page, open this plugin:
Flexilble VM2 Template
and set:
Enable AJAX loading to NO

Wowws, that's not a news.
If the AJAX disabled, everything will work exactly how it works with official Virtuemart layout.

Try one more thing. This time completely disable the Asymmetric template overriding on Vrituemart pages.

To do it, rename this folder:
/templates/flexible_asymmetric/html/com_virtuemart/
to
/templates/flexible_asymmetric/html/com_virtuemart2/

Then browse the product details page again. You will notice, you are not using Asymmetric stylization (template override) in the Virtuemart pages anymore. That is the official Virtuemart layout design.

See if the problem remains or not.

- If the problem remains; I am afraid there is nothing i can do about it. Apparently this is a Virtuemart bug. You can check forum.virtuemart.net

- If the problem is gone: Then it means, our template is responsible for this issue and i will deeply investigate your case.

FYI: to re-activate the asymmetric template override on Virtuemart pages, simply rename back the /com_virtuemart2/ folder to /com_virtuemart/
