When i activate the Shopping cart in the modules section it breaks the site and shows a blank white page.

I suppose you are using VM2.xx (right? not VM1.1.9)

Then make sure to install this plugin: vm2_cart.zip and make sure it is ENABLED. The drop down shopping cart module won't work without that plugin.
