I am having issues making the weight of my products visible in the custom field drop down on the product details page. I set up the parent and child options for my products. The products are identical in description and image but the stock and weight need to be different.

I have set up a custom field type Generic child variant
title: Select Pack
show title: yes
published: yes
cart attribute: yes
admin only : no
is a list: no
hidden: no

As for the parent product I have selected the custom field 'Select Pack' and 'Weight' as value.

So now on the parent product there is a drop down box and 'Choose a product variant first' . The problem on the product parent page is that the drop down shows the product name for every child product instead of their weight.

Could you please give me a hint on how to fix that?

This is 100% related to Virtuemart Core. As template developers there is nothing we can do about it. Because Virtuemart Core decides what to type inside the dropdown select box.Generic Child Variant prints the name of the products. It is what it is.

You can try an advanced 3rd party plugin as custom-field instead of official Generic Child Variant custom-field. There are many cool 3rd party VM Custom Field plugin around. Some of them are free. Use google.com to find them.

thanks for your answer. I didn't find a good plugin that helped. In the end I changed a core file at \administrator\components\com_virtuemart\models\customfields.php to show the weight in the dropdown only. I know its a file that shouldn't be changed but this was the least difficult way. I'm looking forward to the sportmart template for J3 and V3 so I can use the better handling of variants.

If you are not updating VM very often, then it won't hurt to touch that Core files. Because you have changed only the way things are "displayed", the functionality is still the same.

SportMart VM3+J3.x is coming. It is in the final stage: "Testing"
