Check forum.virtuemart.net (or google.com) for your 1st inquiry. Since it is related to Virtuemart Core itself, i am sure there are topics about this problem. I don't know why it happens, never experienced it before.

About your second inquiry, use Firebug to style the popup (and style pretty much anything)
